Multimedia is playing an important role in education, providing learners access to information in various formats such as texts, images, audio, video, and animation presentations. Research (Ayres, 2015) has shown that multimedia learning improves conceptual comprehension, reduces mental effort and enhances higher-order thinking abilities. According to Ayres (2015), mental representations are formed from words and pictures, allowing students to connect prior knowledge with new ideas and construct new knowledge through reflection.
Incorporating multimedia into a lesson can take various forms, and BandLab is an excellent example of this. This multimedia platform allows students to create their own compositions by using the program’s pre-existing sounds and tracks or uploading their own sounds. With access to a variety of instruments, students can manipulate sounds by looping or shortening their duration of a project simultaneously, making it an ideal platform for group work (Fick, 2021). According to Fick (2021), this program is suitable for all ages across different educational settings.

In addition teachers and students have the option to utilise ElevenLabs in conjuction with BandLab. With ElevenLabs, an AI generated speech program, users can select from male or female voices to narrate dialogues that students have created. These narrations can be downloaded and seamlessly integrated into BandLab.

How to integrate BandLab and ElevenLabs in the classroom
BandLabs could be utilised in the classroom to ennahnce English studies. As demonstrated in the video, students have the opportunity to create musical accompaniment to compliment their storytelling. By composing different types of music, such as suspenseful or upbeat tunes, the students can enhance the mood and atmosphere of their stories.
In addition to its benefits, Fick (2021) mentions certain limitations of the program. These included a restricted selection of fifteen tracks and the possibility of its playback speed affected by network connection or CPU processor speed. Moreover, Fick (2021) encountered delays while composing when three individuals tried to use the program simultaneously.
Studio One is an alternative to BandLab that offers a drag and drop system for creating music with included tracks, virtual instruments, loops, and live instrument plug ins. It also features chord detection for identifying chords and suggesting chord progressions. However, it only offers a fourteen day trial before charging a monthly fee. While on trial, I have found it to be more advanced in settings and composing music therefore, it would be limited to an older age group.

Hi Edelaide,
Thanks for the post. Very insightful, and useful including how we might be able to incorporate other programs like Elvenlabs, and an option to compare against.
I think the limitations of Bandlabs wouldn't be felt too badly within the class context, as I doubt many students are wanting to layer more than 15 tracks at a time, though maybe the collaboration point is worth being aware of, as this feature could certainly be used in a classroom setting.
Thanks again!

Hi Edelaide,
Your post has been great in informing me of the important role of Multimedia in Education. It's very awe-striking to see how you can make lyrics with the help of AI (ElevenLabs) - this world is really becoming interesting.
The use of pictures and videos were also very useful as it adds a visual aid to the context of your post, so thank you for that. On a side note though, it would've been helpful to see a video of the process in manipulating BandLab and ElevnLabs as I am hopeless with technology.
I also thought it was very creative how students can you pointed the use the songs they've created to accompany their storytelling - this would…
Hi Edelaide,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog. It was informative and highlighted the decrease of cognitive load in using this approach in the classroom.
I think that it was great that you provided the pros, cons AND alternatives to using BandLab to improve multimedia presentations. I appreciate that you also pointed out that the alternative only offers a free trial before expecting a monthly fee to be paid.
Thanks for providing a great insight on this platform and it's uses.

Hi Edelaide,
Thank you again for a nice blog highlighting the need for the arts to be used across the syllabus.
I think it is really nice that you have focused on music and I think you've done a nice job highlighting the pros and cons with Bandlabs.
It would have been nice to hear a comparison of other similar tools and to see if there are any free versions out there.
I enjoyed reading this blog.

Hi Edelaide,
Thank you so much for you post on how you can include technologies such as Band Lab to improve students learning through the use of multimedia. I had never thought of the idea of multimedia decreasing mental brain effort for students and found this a good point as students would be more inclined to participate.
I also found it very helpful that you provided multiple different options of softwares users could use incase they didn't like the use of Bandlab. I thought your idea of how you could incorporate into English studies a good use. Are there other subjects you think it could be beneficial to incorporate in?
It was a very informative post, and I was able…
